Not all networking events are built for, well… networking. Are you clinking glasses during a happy hour, standing up to give your polished 30-second pitch, or are you in for an evening of polite clapping from your seat in row seven?
The format of the networking opportunity tells you a lot about the flow and your chances of making meaningful connections. For number 5 in our series let's understand the format for connection before you go, so you can prep accordingly or skip it entirely if you’re feeling some networking fatigue....

#5 Format For Connection at the Networking Event
Is the event structured for real conversation (workshops, networking hours), for pitching (Leads groups) or is it more passive (panel, lecture, giant expo)?
Want some tips on how the Practiced Professional looks into the format for connection before going to a networking event?
Go to the site that has the event details and see if there is information posted about the flow of activities.

If it’s not clear, see if you can find the contact for the event and reach out directly to ask.
From the host, sponsor, and audience intel you’ve done, is there someone you know who has attended this event? Reach out to them and get detail on the format. Great reason to connect.
Even if there isn’t a strong format for connection this could still be a high stakes event, if for example, there is a person on the panel you want to meet or you want to strengthen your connection with the lecturer. It’s important to take all the different elements into consideration once you’ve done your research
