What Most Networkers Forget To Do

Quick rewind for anyone new here or if you simply need a little refresh. We’ve been unpacking The Go-Giver’s Five Laws of Stratospheric Success and using them as a lens for more intentional, generous networking. We are at our last one so here are the ones we've gone through so far.

So far we’ve covered:

#1 The Law of ValueFocus less on what you’ll get from a conversation and more on what you can give.

#2 The Law of Compensation:Your opportunities grow when you serve more people and nurture ongoing relationships, not just new ones.

#3 The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first.

#4 The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable thing you can offer is yourself, not a polished performance.

Let's Wrap Things Up With #5: The Law of Receptivity

“The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.”

This one trips people up.

If you’re generous, curious, and service-oriented (which many great networkers are), receiving can feel… awkward. Like you’re imposing, or asking for too much, or somehow “ruining the vibe.”

But here’s the thing: networking isn’t a one-way street. When you don’t allow others to give to you, you unintentionally block connection.

Receiving isn’t selfish. It’s how reciprocity works.

Scrabble pieces that say real is rare.

What Receptivity Looks Like

in Networking

Asking for advice instead of pretending you have it all figured out.

Letting someone make an introduction and saying yes.

Sharing what you’re working toward, not just what you offer.

People want to help, you just have to let them.

Put It Into Networking Practice

At your next event, try this simple shift:

Instead of going in with a mindset of I'm just here to meet people and see what happens... Think about and execute on something like:

“I’m currently exploring [X] and would love any insight or perspective.”

Examples:

  • “I’m thinking about my next career move and would love advice from someone who’s been there.”

  • “I’m exploring ways to grow my business this year and always appreciate learning how others have done it.”

You’re not asking for a favor. You're inviting connection.

And that invitation often leads to surprising generosity.

Why This Matters

Giving builds goodwill. Receiving builds relationship.
