Flipping the Networking Script - How May I Be of Service

We’re unpacking the Five Laws of Stratospheric Success from the book "The Go-Giver" and showing you how each one can make you a more intentional, generous, and effective networker.

In the inital blog of this series we covered The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment. In networking terms, that means stop worrying about what you’ll get out of a conversation and start focusing on what you can give.

Let's see what we can learn from the second law as it relates to networking.

#2 The Law of Compensation

Your income is determined by how many people you serve

and how well you serve them.

In The Go-Giver, The Law of Compensation reminds us that growth in business, relationships, or opportunities doesn’t come from chasing numbers, it comes from expanding impact.

In networking terms, it’s not about how many business cards you collect, but how many people you connect with meaningfully (and how well you follow up).

One sincere, ongoing connection can open more doors than a hundred polite handshakes.

Think of Your Network As A Garden

If you only show up to plant new seeds but never water the old ones, things start to wilt.

Relationships thrive when they’re nurtured with quick check-ins, genuine curiosity, or a simple “Saw this article and thought of you.”

The more people you stay connected with, the stronger (and more fruitful) your network becomes.

Put It Into Networking Practice

Before the end of the week (or how about right now), pick one person you haven’t connected with in a while and send a short note. Something like:

“Hey, it’s been a bit since we last talked!

[ ] How are things going with your XYZ project?

[ ] What's been the best part of fall for you so far?

[ ] <Choose your own adventure>

No agenda. No ask. Just connection.

Or, if you met someone recently and never followed up, now’s the perfect time to do it. It’s never too late, (unless you wait another year...).

When you serve your network by showing up consistently, you become the person people want to stay in touch with and opportunities have a funny way of finding those people.
