The Networking Skill That Creates Opportunities (But Few Practice)

We're glad to see you here as we continue to explore The Go-Giver’s Five Laws of Stratospheric Success and how they can stratospherically change your networking approach and outcomes.

So far we’ve covered:

#1 The Law of ValueFocus less on what you’ll get from a conversation and more on what you can give.

#2 The Law of Compensation:Your opportunities grow when you serve more people and nurture ongoing relationships, not just new ones.

Let's jump into the third law...

#3 The Law of Influence

Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.

When most people think about influence, they think presence, persuasion, charisma, or that person at the event who somehow knows absolutely everyone.

But influence in networking isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room or selling people on your brilliance.

It’s about helping other people succeed.

Influence grows when you consistently show up in service of others, sharing resources, offering support, connecting people to opportunities, and celebrating their wins even when you don’t benefit directly.

When people feel seen, supported, and elevated by you, they remember you. They trust you. They champion you even when you’re not in the room.

Think of Influence When Networking As Being The Soil, Not The Sunshine

Influence is less about being the sunshine everyone notices and

more about being the soil that

helps others grow.

Put It Into Networking Practice

Identify someone in your network who might benefit from knowing someone else you know. Then make a thoughtful intro. Not a lazy hallway intro like:

“You two should know each other—good luck!”

But something like:

“Alex, meet Jordan. Alex just launched a new sustainability consulting practice and Jordan, I know you’ve been looking for partners who can help your corporate clients meet ESG goals. I thought this might be a great connection.”

Context creates value.

And no, you don’t need to force-match everyone like a networking fairy godmother. One quality intro goes a long way.

When you help others rise, your influence rises with them and suddenly you are the sunshine in the room.
