What The Best Networkers Know and Practice

Over ten years ago, before “networking coach” was even a thing people Googled, Alyce (Coach Extraordinaire and Articulated Intelligence Co-Founder) started her networking business by embodying the concepts from one simple (and now very well-loved) book: The Go-Giver.

Check out her copy (yes, it is a physical book)!  It’s a thing of beauty, highlighted, dog-eared, and filled with sticky notes that have long lost their stick.

Shout out and virtual hug to Cori Jo Groza who gifted Alyce the book and forever changed the way she thinks about and shows up for networking.

This book and it’s concepts have significantly informed how we network and how we coach others to intentionally network.

So, over the next few weeks, we’re unpacking The Go-Giver’s Five Laws of Stratospheric Success and showing you how each one can make you a more intentional, generous, and effective networker.

#1 The Law of Value

“Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.”

In networking terms, that means stop worrying about what you’ll get out of a conversation and start focusing on what you can give.

No, not swag or free consulting (although, I saw a guy give away “Nothing Bundt Cakes” recently at an event and it was pretty sweet).

It means being curious. Listening fully. Remembering names. Making someone feel like the most interesting person you’ve met all week.

Because when people walk away from you thinking, “Wow, that was refreshing,” you’ve already made a stronger impression than any perfectly polished pitch could.

Put It Into Networking Practice

At your next event, pick one person and ask a question that gets them talking about what lights them up, not what they do. Some ideas...

  1. What’s your favorite thing to do when you are not working? (And if they say sleeping, walk away and find someone else…  Just kidding, give it another try)!

  2. What was the best part of your weekend, day, summer?

  3. If you suddenly had a free afternoon, how would you spend it?

Then really listen and be curious.

When you create connection and lean in with genuine curiosity, you become valuable.
